The Chavari is a strong, muscular dog, quite powerful, but not heavy. Five toes and modified pads increase grip, making the dog more stable. The vestigial finger disappeared as unnecessary even on the thoracic limbs. Dogs are born with short tails; if they have a long tail, it is docked.
A distinctive feature is the folds of skin behind the back of the head, forming a small hump on the neck.
The dog has an independent, moody appearance and can be somewhat unsociable. He keeps his head low and only raises it when he shows interest in something.
The Chavari retained clearly defined observational qualities from their ancestors. The dog makes sure that no one gets lost or lags behind, and also stops any attempts to harm a person or his property. At the same time, Chavari does not spare himself at all.
Nowadays, Chavari act as bodyguards, police and military dogs.
However, the first owner took him out for dog fighting, because the abundance of skin protects him well from serious injuries. Therefore, Chavari are also regularly found in dog fights.
