Now Viewing: colonel_sandersTag type: Character The founder and mascot of kfc. His real name is Harland Sanders and he lived from September 6, 1890-December 16, 1980. He often moved from job to job when he was a young man and only finally found success and a stable job after he founded KFC. While he had been in the military in his youth, he was never actually a 'colonel.' He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 1935 by Kentucky governor Ruby Laffoon during KFC's earliest years, as the restaurant was rising in popularity. He eventually decided to run with the title and present himself as a distinguished American colonel and grew a goatee, dressed in a white suit, and a string tie. This was how he presented himself in the last few decades of his life and it was this image of him that became the mascot of KFC.
