Goof-Proof Way to Draw a Simple Wine Glass
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
How to draw a simple wine glass? Quickly!
For centuries, painters have painted the beauty of a glass of wine. We are attracted to its color shimmering inside and the colors reflecting everywhere outside. The glass itself can be daintily thin or chunky.
I practice painting the various wine glass shapes, and note which glass is used for different wines. I practice by holding the glass and studying its features: Thin or thick stem, the bowl size and shape, is it an elegant wine glass - or a common, everyday one? Take inventory and decide first. Next, draw what you see.
Place the wine glass on a table - I sketch it or take a photo of the glass at eye level, or “cat’s eye view.” Observe where the light source is coming from and any hot spots you see reflecting on the table.
Practice drawing your observations on a large drawing pad with a soft charcoal vine, by warming up with a full page of ovals and round bottoms.
Wine glasses are made up of ovals, straight side lines or curved slide lines. When you are looking at the wine glass straight on, the top of the glass and the liquid level inside the glass should also be level.
Finish your wine glass by connecting the top glass edge with the sides and bottom - there’s your glass shape. Watch the video! Draw the stem, starting at the bottom center, going straight down to the flat base. That’s the “how to draw” part of this BobBlast.
For color, I pre-paint most of the background on a quarter sheet of watercolor paper. The top half is a dark, rich red - the lower half is the white of the paper. After the background color has dried, I paint-sketch the oval, bowl and lines of the glass and stem with a light color line.
After the shape is sketched, I add the wine color, the table top color and the background. Watch the video so you can see how I work with adding the light source, sparkling hot spots and reflective color.
Cheers!
